Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

On Strategic Alliance With Israel

The speech made by Brajesh Mishra, National Security Advisor, in Washington advocating an alliance between the US, Israel and India to fight terrorism indicates how the Vajpayee government is moving towards a complete shift in foreign policy and strategic alliances. For some time now, the BJP-led government's eagerness to strike a strategic triangular relationship with the Untied States and Israel has been evident.

The Sharon government in Israel has been notorious for its brutal repressive policy towards the Palestinians. It also, with the support of the United States, occupies Arab territories defying the United Nation's resolutions.

By calling for a `core' of democratic societies to fight international terrorism, the Principal Secretary to the Indian Prime Minister has once again offered to be part of America's global strategy.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly opposes this trend of allying with Israel whose government today is grossly violating the rights of the Palestinian people and its Arab neighbours.
