Talks With NSCN(IM)

Tuesday, January 21, 2003

Press Release

A large all-party delegation from Manipur met with CPI(M) Polit Bureau members Sitaram Yechury and S. Ramachandran Pillai on January 20, 2003 at CPI(M) headquarters.

The CPI(M) informed the delegation that while it welcomes talks with the NSCN (IM) to resolve the decades-old problem of Naga militancy, it reiterated the earlier position that in arriving at any agreement with the NSCN(IM), the government of India should not disturb the existing territorial integrity of the North-Eastern states. Any attempt to do this will have serious consequences for peace and stability in the entire North-Eastern region.

The CPI(M) informed the delegation that it had sought an all-Party meeting with the presence of all the parties in the North-East to build a consensus before any final agreement with the NSCN (IM) is arrived at.
