Kanthi: Determined Campaign Braving Violence

May 10, 2014
The people of Contai are constantly living under the fear of violence unleashed by the ruling TMC. What is more disturbing for the people is the role and attitude of the administration which remains a mute spectator. Mamata Banerjee before becoming CM had kindled hopes in people. However after becoming Chief Minister she is indulging in the politics of lies to hoodwink the people by making more false promises. Repenting for their past decision to vote for the TMC, the people of this region comprising important tourist destinations like Digha, Tajpur, Shankarpur, Rasulpur, Mandarmoni, Junput and so on are now determined to lend their support to the CPI (M) candidate Tapas Sinha.
Seeing the swelling support of the people for the CPI(M) candidate the TMC is stepping up its violent attacks on the people, which it had started since the 2009 elections. Many CPI(M) cadres of Khejuri, Patashpur and Mugberia were forced to leave their homes and stay away. Their lands have been forcibly taken away by TMC goons. Houses have been looted.

In Khejuri alone 24 party comrades have been killed. From 2009 the TMC has prohibited anybody from working for the CPI (M). 35 party offices have been closed down. TMC has forcibly occupied 10 party offices of the CPI(M). Till date 326 people have not been able to return to their homes. The same is the case in areas like Patashpur, Marishda, Bhagwanpur, Mugberia, Kanthi, Ramnagar etc.

TMC supremo had promised that Digha will be converted into a tourist destination like Goa. In reality nothing has happened other than floundering money on entertainment. No thought has been rendered to develop tourism which is one of the main source of sustenance of the people of this region. The cashew processing industry in this area has been destroyed. The brass and copper industry in the areas of Chandanpur, Kalyanpur is also suffering due to lack of proper planning. So is the “mat” making household business in Ramnagar area. Mamata Banerjee's promise to develop trading in betel leaves has not been kept.

The long list of failed promises is bound to boomerang on the TMC. Constant threats and attacks notwithstanding, the Left's campaign in these areas continued gaining momentum. Even the attack on the candidate Tapas Sinha himself did not deter the comrades who not only protested against such undemocratic acts of terror but rallied around to meet the people and asked them to come out and vote for the Left.
