Campaigning in the Madurai South Assembly segment, CPI(M)’s Lok Sabha candidate, B. Vikraman, was accorded a rousing welcome by womenfolk performing the traditional ‘aarathi’, in more than 15 places. Speaking at a public meeting, he said that there should be more emphasis on bringing in heavy industries as they would offer more jobs to the youth. Industries such as rail coach manufacturing units could employ a large number of people. Similarly, factories manufacturing products required for Indian Defence units should also be established in Madurai, Vikraman said.
Focusing on the tourism sector, he said that the ‘temple’ city, which attracts tourists from all over the country, should be made home to new tourist spots. He said that attractive, tourist-friendly projects between Madurai and Munnar, Madurai and Kodaikanal and Madurai and Rameswaram would draw a large crowd, especially from those visiting the famous Meenakshi Temple.
Vikraman also added that Madurai being the gateway to the southern districts in Tamil Nadu, it was necessary to work towards developing the airport, setting up power plants in the region and increasing the number of trains between Madurai and Chennai.
Accompanied by CPI(M) MLA R. Annadurai, former MLA N. Nanmaran and other senior party functionaries, Vikraman assured the electorate that he would focus on the basic needs of the people and strive to resolve the power and water crises in the region.
