Thousands Gather in Alathur Braving Sweltering Heat

A major chunk of the Alathur constituency falls within the district of Palakkad, also known as the rice bowl of Kerala. As the summer sets in and the mountain rocks heat up, people prefer not to venture out. The Temperature in Palakkad has hovered around forty degree Celsius in the past few days but the sweltering heat did not deter the thousands of people who braving the scorching heat turned up at the meeting in the constituency, in support of the CPI(M) candidate P.K. Biju.

CPI(M) Polit Bureau, Brinda Karat, who began her five day election campaign in Kerala from Alathur, got a rousing welcome and was showered with flower petals as she stepped out of the vehicle at the meeting venue.

She began by accusing the UPA government of being the “most corrupt government in the history of India”. Questioning A K Antony’s claim of “political morality” she wondered why Antony has kept a studied silence while the lid of one corruption scandal after the other at the Centre was being blown off. “Has his morality sunk in the Arabian Sea?” she asked. In a scathing attack on Food Minister K V Thomas, she said that Thomas’ name will be written in history as a protector of rats as he keeps food grains in godowns without distributing it to the hungry people. Com. Brinda addressed several meetings in the Constituency throughout the day.
