The TMC may shake hands with the BJP any day and cannot be trusted, said Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at a huge public meeting at Hazra Crossing on 7th May. Mamata Banerjee still does not admit that it was wrong to support Modi in the aftermath of the Gujarat massacre. She had not only sent him flowers but even went into an alliance with the BJP after the riots. The TMC is a single-leader party, with no ideological basis whatsoever.
The meeting was in support of the Left Front nominated CPI (M) candidate from the South Kolkata Constituency, Dr. Nandini Mukherjee. A massive crowd had assembled, spilling over the Hazra crossing. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said that the neoliberal policies of the Congress had driven the country into such widespread poverty, unemployment and hunger as never before. Commenting on the danger that the BJP poses for the country he said that electing Modi would not change the face of poverty in the country because their economic policies are identical to that of the Congress. The Gujarat Model sounded hollow in Bengal when held in contrast to the real development of rural Bengal during the Left Front rule. Modi is backed by the terrible communal forces of the RSS on one hand and the super rich corporate houses on the other. The RSS has never been allowed to raise their heads in Bengal, now the TMC is giving them the chance to spread roots. The TMC and BJP had carefully refrained from any confrontation in the run up to the elections. At the BJP’s brigade meeting, Modi had tempted Bengal with two laddus. Now the TMC is taking a few digs at the BJP. Buddhadeb pointed out that not once had Mamata said she will not ally with the BJP. He concluded with a call for a non-Congress non-BJP alternative at the Centre for pursuing democratic, secular, pro-people alternative policies.
