Calling upon voters to ensure that a government that takes up alternative policies is formed in Delhi, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said that if the Left becomes more powerful, it can stop passage of unjust laws.
“The Left can do good work for the people of this land,” Bhattacharjee said at a public meeting at Karbala, Krishnanagar in Nadia district, in support of the Left Front nominated CPI (M) candidates -- Dr. Santanu Jha for the Krishnanagar Parliamentary constituency, Archana Biswas for Ranaghat (SC) Parliamentary constituency, Biswanath Gupta for Chakdah Assembly Constituency by-election and Anup Ghosh d for the Santipur Assembly Constituency by-election.
The vast maidan at Karbala was packed, the crowd spilling over right up to the Krishnanagar bus stand. Scores of people who couldn’t enter the ground listened from the surrounding streets, rooftops and verandahs. The presence of women in large numbers was significant.
Com Bhattacharjee asked the people to think who could serve the country best before casting their votes. “The Congress had already admitted defeat. They had accomplished next to nothing in their 10-year rule. Where there used to be about eight to ten super rich businessmen in India, the number had now crossed a hundred. On the flipside poverty, hunger, and unemployment are eating into the country. The Prime Minister has failed to control prices. He has voluntarily surrendered control over the cost of petrol and diesel. People gave the Congress time, and it has failed them,” he said
He said “our work does not end with the defeat of the Congress, because if one road is bad, the other one next to it is the terrible force of the BJP, which plans to divide the country along communal lines. Our plan is to send away the Congress and stop the BJP.”
Com Bhattacharjee said the Left was among 11 parties that have come together on some common policies. The combined vote bank of these parties is in no way less than that of the Congress or BJP. “We want to form a government which will ensure land to the landless, provide 35 kg of foodgrain to each family at Rs 2 a kilo, a minimum wage of Rs 10,000, and a pension of RS 4,000,” he said.
He reminded the crowd that the Trinamool Congress was born from the Congress, and at various points of time had joined hands with both Congress and BJP. “Mamata Banerjee had sent flowers to Narendra Modi at a time when there was uproar in the country over the Gujarat riots. She has never regretted being with the BJP and she has still made no statement in which she says she will not join them this time around,” he said.
He also spoke about the complete disarray that West Bengal was in right now. “Farmers are not getting the cost of their rice, grain or jute. The production of rice is falling. For the last three years, not a single industry has come up. The steel plant in Shalboni is moving out of the state. Wipro and Infosys have said that they won’t come. No one cares about the Taant industry in Nadia. The department of handicraft has practically stopped functioning,” he said.
Com Bhattacharjee referred to the terrible experience of the people in the Saradha scam, saying that a betrayal of such huge proportions would not be tolerated. He reminded people of how the farce of the School Service Commission examinations had insulted the youth of the state. Public funds were being wasted on large government “utsavs” (festivals). He concluded by saying all the money being spent is black money and that is why the TMC also must be defeated in this LS polls.
