Ujiarpur, the Land of Struggles Hopes to Make History!

May 02, 2014
Comrade Surendra Prasad Yadav was brutally murdered by feudal landlords in January 2012, in Karauti village of Dal Singh Sarai. A party office now stands in the land that Comrade Yadav donated to the party from where the CPI(M) runs its campaign for the Lok Sabha elections for the Ujiarpur constituency in Bihar, contested by Comrade Ramdev Verma.

Comrade Neelam, the elected president of the Karauti village panchayat accused Vijaya Yadav, a close ally of Nitish Kumar for the murder of Comrade Surendra. The investigations did not yield much results but revived our land struggles, not to mention our persistent effort to fight for higher wages in this area notorious for its low wage rate. “No other Party but the CPI(M) fights for these issues of the  poor people”, said Comrade Neelam.

Comrade Sitaram Yechury, Polit Bureau Member of the CPI(M) participated in two public meetings  at Ujiarpur and Bibhutipur. Large presence of landless workers, women and the poor testified to Comrade Neelam's conviction in continuous struggles. Speakers at both meetings Chandra Ram, Ramprasad Chaurasia, Sunita Devi reiterated that it is the CPI(M) which will continue to fight the landlords for land rights and struggle for the rights and dignity of dalits. Other speakers like Md. Nassar and the veterinary physician Dr. Basudev Prasad spoke about the importance of fighting against the rule of casteist forces which has continued to impede the struggle for rights over land in the area.

CPI(M) candidate Ramdev Verma has been elected six times to the state assembly from this area, so far. He is fighting Nityanand Ray of the BJP and Alok Mehta of the JD(U) who play divisive politics among the people, already divided along the lines of caste. Ramdev Verma is very confident and said that the CPI(M) will create history in Ujiarpur as he witnessed great support from the people even in areas like Fatepur where the Left is not organizationally strong. Our sustained contact with the people in this area through struggles has made the people more confident and they are excited about our participation in the Lok Sabha elections, he said.

Samastipur is the land of martyrs, with a strong legacy of peasant movements with more than 30 comrades sacrificed their lives during the struggles and nineteen of them just in Bibhuitpur. Our comrades are continuing the struggle even now to claim rights over hundreds of acres of land that the landed forces trying to steal from the poor.
