
Born into a family of toddy-tappers, Com. C.B. Chandra Babu became the leader of the labour class of Alappuzha district through youth movements. His long socio-political career of 37 years, as a true gentleman, has gained him the respect of even his adversaries. It is with the courage of being the direct heir to the Punnapra-Vayalar Revolt, which made the sons of the soil into men with backbones, that Com. C.B. Chandra Babu (53) becomes the LDF candidate in Alappuzha. Com. Babu entered the public sphere through Deshabhimani study circle during "Emergency" and became active through KSYF. In 1978, he became the Unit Secretary of KYSF in Aroor and when DYFI was formed in 1980, he became the Aroor Village Joint Secretary. In 1984, he became Aroor Area Secretary and later the District Secretary and State Treasurer. From 1988, he served as a member of the Central Working Committee of DYFI. Becoming a member of the CPI(M) in 1979, CB, as he is popularly called, served as Aroor Local Committee member in 1984, Area Committee member in 1988, District Committee member in 1994 and District Secretariat member in 2005. In 2009, he became the District Secretary and State Committee member of the Party. He has been working as CITU District Joint Secretary, State Committee member, Industrial Employees’ Union Secretary, District Lorry Transport Drivers and Cleaners’ Society Secretary and Alappuzha District Construction Workers’ Union Secretary. As the president of the District Co–operative Bank for a couple of years from 2008, Com. Chandra Babu’s role in saving the firm from crisis was vital. He also became member of the director board of State Co-operative bank.
