Born on February 2, 1944 in undivided Bengal, K.G. Das after passing out from school joined the Andaman and Nicobar Administration and later on the Andaman Forest Department, from which he retired in 2004. While in service he was associated with the Government Employee’s Association of which he was elected General Secretary in 1990. As the General Secretary of Non-Gazetted Officers’ Association, he relentlessly fought for a rational transfer policy, recruitment of sufficient numbers of dakman-cum-peons, fixing of duty hours and other issues concerning government employees in the islands. During 1997, when the Joint Action Council of employees was formed in the A&N Islands, K.G.Das was elected as the Executive Secretary of the Council. A movement was launched under the auspices of the Council for regularization of services and various other demands. Consequent to this, all the demands were conceded. In 2004, he was elected Secretary of the Andaman & Nicobar Committee of the CPI(M), a post he continues to hold till today. He is also the Convener of LDF and has been fighting for the overall development of the islands.
