Fifty three year old Comrade Pala Ram, presently sarpanch of Khemawala Gram Panchayat, is the nominee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from the Shri Ganganagar Parliamentary constituency. A grass-roots worker, Com. Pala Ram was elected president of the Panchayat Samiti of Sadulshahar. He was the director of the Panchayat Samiti in 2002. This is an area where the Communists led several successful farmer, peasant and agricultural worker agitations, over a range of issues from irrigation to minimum support price issues. The CPI(M) is known here for leading such struggles amid severe repression by the State machinery. Coming from a very modest background, as most Communists in the region, Comrade Palaram has studied only till class five and has been a committed Party member since 1980. He has been a district secretariat member, tehsil committee secretary of Sadulshahar, and district secretary of the All India Agricultural Workers’ Union.
