P.K. Sreemathi

Comrade P.K. Sreemathi is the LDF-supported CPI(M) candidate from Kannur Lok Sabha constituency. She is widely admired in Kerala for her performance as Minister for Health and Family Welfare in the previous Left and Democratic Front Government. As Health Minister, she strengthened the community health centers and palliative care. She secured a place in the hearts of common people of the state due to her women and child-oriented political and social interventions, both within the Assembly and outside. Currently she is a member of CPI(M) Central Committee and National Treasurer of All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA). She also served as State Secretary of AIDWA and State Vice President of DYFI. She was also active in teachers organization. Com. Sreemathi was born to Kelappan Nambiar and P.K. Meenakshi Teacher. After being noticed in public domain as chairperson of Standing Committee on Education of Kannur District Council and as first president for Kannur District Panchayath, she was elected to Kerala Legislative Assembly for the first time from Payyannur constituency in 2001. Com. Sreemathi became the Health and Family Welfare Minister of Kerala in 2006 when she was elected from Payyannur. As a result of her pro-people initiatives, she could gather the support of people from all walks of life irrespective of political affiliation. The indefinite hunger strike observed by Com. Sreemathi in front of Kerala Secretariat building in protest against the brutal attack on tribal people of Muthanga in Wayanad district got national attention. She played a key role in resisting attacks against women and in booking many culprits involved in sex rackets. Com. Sreemathi was in the forefront to wipe the tears of poor patients when maladies broke out and spread in Kerala. She reached each and every corner of Kerala for coordinating health department activities during such crises. After her Pre Degree studies, she underwent teacher training course and soon joined as Teacher in Neduvampram Upper Primary School. When she opted to retire voluntarily to do full time social work, she was Head Mistress of the school.

Kannur-Key Issues
Kannur, situated in North Malabar region, is largely underdeveloped. Most of the traditional industries in this area, including handlooms, are facing serious problems due to the anti-people policies of the Central Government. The people of Kannur are looking for a pro-people alternative Government at the centre.
