Comrade Tamil Selvi, aged 42 years, the CPI(M) candidate for the Thanjavur Parliamentary constituency, is a member of the Thanjavur District Committee of the CPI(M) and the district secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association. She is a post graduate and has also completed B.Ed. She joined the CPI(M) in 1994, and has been a key worker of the Party for 20 years now. She has participated in and led many struggles, including the Nadukkaveri agitation for removal of a Tasmac shop, payment of wages in MGNREGS, agitations on the issue of sexual crimes against women and so on. Her husband, N.V.Kannan, is a member of the CPI(M) Thanjavur district secretariat. The couple has two sons. Tamil Selvi is the daughter-in-law of Thyagi N.Venktachalam, one of the leaders of CPI (M) in the district who was murdered by landlords.
