Sukhwinder Singh Sekhon

Fifty one year old Sukhwinder Singh, CPI(M) nominee for the Ludhiana Parliamentary seat is no newcomer to agitational politics. While in school, he joined the Students Federation of India in 1978 and was elected to various leadership positions in the SFI. A graduate, he joined the CPI(M) early on and has been a whole timer since then. In 1984, he was jailed in the course of an agitation by the brick kiln workers. The case came to a closure in 1989. The same year he was elected state vice president of the SFI. He was also elected district president of the DYFI in 1990 and state president in 1994. In 1996, he attended the world youth festival at Cuba. In 2001, he was elected district secretary of the party and remained so till 2012. The same year he was elected also as general secretary Punjab Kisan Sabha and continues in that post. He has been in jail for a maximum of four and a half months. He led struggles for the implementation of the MGNREGA and in other industrial issues. He also served as a Panchayat member of village Pamali and was president Co-operative Agricultural Service Society of Pamali village for three terms. In a constituency which is dominated by Akali and Congress politics but also that has a rich history of freedom fighters, Comrade Sukhwinder Sekhon is the most credible face in this region. The party under this leadership has raised several contentious issues pertaining to property tax, sewerage, water supply, price rise, unemployment, rehabilitation of Abad-kar, implementation of MGNREGA, guaranteeing minimum wages for industrial labour, problems of drugs, pollution, law and order etc.
