A post graduate in political science and currently a student of law, Surendra Lal Singh is the young and militant adivasi leader contesting as the CPI (M) candidate from the reserved Sarguja (ST) Parliamentary constituency in Chhattisgarh. He is the vice president of the Adivasi Ekta Mahasabha and also, a member of the Surajpur district committee of the CPI (M). Com. Surendra Lal Singh has been at the forefront of various struggles launched by the CPI (M) in the region for securing the rights of tribal communities and fighting against their exploitation. Some of the issues on which he has led struggles include: ownership rights (patta) to the tribals who are in possession of forest lands, scholarships to tribal students, issuance of tribe/caste certificates, purchase of rice at the fixed support price by societies, providing fertilizer and seeds to the peasants at subsidized price, banning whimsical bus fares charged from tribals, mandatory purchase of sugarcane by owners of the sugar mills from all the sugarcane growers, inclusion of several tribes in the Scheduled Tribes list including that of Nagasia Tribe, and various other demands related to livelihood of tribals, peasants and the rural poor. These struggles have been successful in several matters.
