In the backdrop of state wide attack unleashed by the Congress Party on CPI (M) offices in Kerala following the “stone pelting” on Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, some anti-social elements today burnt the memorial of P Krishna Pillai, the founder of Communist Party in Kerala.
A thatched house in Kannarkad in Alappuzha, preserved as a memorial of the legendary communist Comrade P Krishnapillai was torched and burnt by miscreants. It was here that Krishna Pillai known popularly by the pseudonym “sakhav” (comrade) had taken refuge trying to evade the police following the ban on the Communist Party of India. He died on August 19 1948 following a snake bite in this very home.
As a mark of respect to this great revolutionary, the house belonging to an agricultural worker was maintained and preserved in its original condition by the CPI (M). Following the attack the house was completely gutted down and statue erected in front of this memorial was also damaged.
Reacting to this attack, CPI(M) State Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said the perpetrators did not have any clue of the personality that Krishna Pillai was. The hasty manner in which the Congress leadership denied its involvement points out to who the culprits are. This attack too is part of the state wide attack let loose by the Congress, he said. Elsewhere in Alappuzha district, many offices of the Party were attacked. He appealed to Party workers to maintain calm and restraint in the face of such attacks. Meanwhile, opposition leader V S Achuthanandan has demanded a thorough inquiry to the incident.
