ESMA Cases Against Opposition Leaders in TN

Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) condemns the Jayalalitha government’s action in filing cases against prominent leaders of the opposition including the state secretary of the CPI(M), N. Varadarajan on charges of instigating government employees to go on strike. Under the direction of the government, the police has filed a case under a clause of the ESMA, which itself is an anti-democratic law.

If the Jayalalitha government thinks it can cow down the opposition with such tactics, it is mistaken. The CPI(M) along with all other democratic forces will resist the increasingly authoritarian and anti-democratic attitude of the state government.
