Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

Take All Measures To Maintain Status Quo At Ayodhya

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly condemns the declaration of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad that any attempt to stop its activists to congregate at Ayodhya for its October 17th programme will result in large scale communal riots all over the country. This is nothing but an open challenge to the rule of law and the Indian Constitution. The Supreme Court has ordered the maintenance of status quo in the disputed and acquired land at Ayodhya.

The Mulayam Singh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh is taking preventive measures to ensure the implementation of the Supreme Court directive. In this connection, the Prime Minister's appeal to Mr. Mulayam Singh to allow the VHP workers to proceed to Ayodhya since they have promised to remain `peaceful' is both dubious and dangerous. Such were the similar assurances that the VHP and other RSS outfits gave in 1992 when they proceeded to demolish the Babri Masjid. Even the Supreme Court was assured that the Masjid would be protected by the then BJP-led state government.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) calls upon the Central government to provide all assistance to the UP state government to take all necessary measures to uphold the rule of law and the strict implementation of the Supreme Court directive.
