Relief Work in Uttarakhand

The CPI(M) unit in Uttarakhand has been working tirelessly day and night trying to provide succor to the families of those missing after the tragedy that struck parts of the state in June.  Around a thousand persons are reported missing in Phata, in Ukhimath, which is the worst affected area in Rudrayaprayag and is located on the banks of the river Mandakini.

A relief camp has been set up and around 600 families of the 1000 missing persons have been contacted. The first priority is to provide them with essential food items. This is all the more important since the PDS system has collapsed due to damaged roads.

CPI(M) State Secretary, Vijai Rawat informed that kits with essential supplies are being sent to the affected families. Each kit consists of 10 kg rice, 1 kg dal, 1 kg sugar, ½  kg of oil, milk powder, salt, spices and other essentials. These kits are being loaded from Dehradun in small vehicles that can carry 50-70 kits at a time and transported to Phata. From here local CPI(M) volunteers take over and carry it on their backs to reach them to the affected families. Despite the continuing landslides, attempts are being made to reach the maximum number of such families.

Earlier, the CPI(M) had organised two medical camps at Phata in Ukhimath and Tharali in Chamoli district from June 17 to 24. More than 2000 people were treated and provided with medical supplies and relief at these camps.
