Intensify Struggles in Bengal

The West Bengal State Committee's extended meeting called upon all Party units to intensify struggle on people's issues. The two-day meeting held on September 7-8 decided to mobilise people against the increasing burden caused by the policies of the central and state governments. State-wide movement against price-rise and local-level movements against distress of toiling masses will be organised. The meeting reviewed the Panchayat elections and called for a patient and sustained effort to strengthen ties with the masses.

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat, addressing the meeting, explained the national political situation. He said, Congress& UPA have become increasingly alienated from the people by pursuing neo-liberal policies. BJP is trying to take advantage of the situation by posing Narendra Modi as leader as he has the support of a good section of big bourgeoisie and hardcore Hindutwa forces. Increasing communal incidents in UP and Bihar are a pointer to imminent danger. The Left forces, while trying to mobilise non-Congress, non-BJP secular forces against neo-liberal policies, have decided to intensify struggles of the toiling people.

Former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said that terrorisation by the ruling party has thwarted people's verdict in the panchayat elections. Despite this, the Left Front has been able to maintain its political influence in some districts and even made marginal gains in some areas. As attacks on people have opened up scope for new struggles, our aim should be to mobilise large number of people. CPI(M)State Secretary Biman Basu  said that the situation in the state is increasingly turning grave and attacks on democratic rights are mounting. The organisational strength of the party has to be developed manifold and we have to move with self-critical appraisal, repairing areas of deficiencies.
