P.B. Communiqué

The CPI(M) demands that such "reconversion" based on false assurances and inducements and with State patronage be prohibited with immediate effect. Action should be taken under the relevant provisions of the law against those who are organizing such activities which are disruptive of communal harmony and creating communal tensions. The U.P. government has already registered cases and taken action against the organisers of the Agra “reconversion”. This must be done by other state governments too.

Prohibit Forcible Reconversion

The BJP and RSS leaders are demanding a law to ban forcible religious conversions. There is no need for such a law as Article 25 of the Indian Constitution provides for “freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religions”. If there is any forcible conversion it is already covered under Indian Penal Code (Section 153(a)) as it classifies forcible attempts in the name of religion as a criminal offence.

Act Firmly Against Forced Conversions

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly condemns the religious conversion of around 300 Muslims, mostly poor migrants from Bihar and West Bengal in Agra through false enticement, force and intimidation by the RSS/BJP. The RSS/BJP leaders have declared their intent to organise similar conversions of Muslims and Christians in Ghazipur, Aligarh and other places in Uttar Pradesh.....Such forced conversions are criminal offences and all those indulging in or encouraging such religious conversions should be prosecuted. The Polit Bureau urges upon both the state government in Uttar Pradesh and the central government to take firm steps to stop such conversions.

Doordarshan’s RSS Telecast Condemned

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) condemns the decision of Doordarshan to telecast live the speech of the RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami. The RSS uses the occasion to propagate its Hindutva ideology. The national public broadcaster had no business to telecast live the speech of the Chief of an organisation like the RSS. Such an action shows how the public broadcaster is being misused by the Modi government.

"Hindutva" Militates Against Secularism

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) expresses its strong opposition to the various statements being made by the RSS Chief Shri Mohan Bhagwat on `Hindutva’ which militates against the secular concept of Indian citizenship. Hindutva is a majoritarian concept which is part of the narrow and divisive agenda of the RSS. These provocative statements are designed to impose a majoritarian Hindu concept of the nation. The RSS and its various outfits are making a plethora of such objectionable statements ever since the BJP formed the government.

On Aseemanand's Revelation

In such a situation and in view of the grave implications the reported actions of certain RSS leaders have on national security and integrity, it is essential for the NIA, which is presently in-charge of the investigations, to immediately and urgently investigate the revelations made in the interview and take appropriate action in the matter.

Maintain Peace in J&K

Despite aberrations, the people of the state have maintained communal harmony and brotherhood till now. Attempts to sow discord among the people on religious and communal lines must be defeated. People should not get swayed by rumor mongers and provocations of divisive elements, who are out to disrupt peace in the state.
